In four years, Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory has manufactured two million electric vehicles (EVs). The facility produces Model 3 and Model Y vehicles for both the domestic and foreign markets. In 2022, Tesla delivered 1.31 million vehicles worldwide, with Shanghai accounting for more than half of the total.

The Shanghai Gigafactory is Tesla's largest plant outside of the United States. It has the capacity to produce more than 750,000 vehicles per year. According to Tesla, the factory is the major production site for automobiles exported to regions that do not have a Gigafactory.

Tesla was the sixth largest firm in the S&P 500 Index as of July 2023.

Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory can produce more than 750,000 Model 3 and Model Y automobiles each year. As a result, it is Tesla's largest facility. The factory serves as the principal manufacturing site for Tesla vehicles shipped to areas without a Gigafactory.

Tesla has a total installed manufacturing capacity of over 2,025,000 units per year. The California factory has a capacity of 650,000 units per year, while the Berlin and Texas plants each have a capacity of more than 250,000 units per year.

Tesla intends to develop 172 acres of abandoned farmland surrounding Giga Shanghai in order to grow its electric vehicle production in China to 450,000 units per year. However, as the EV price war continues, local governments are concerned about overcapacity.

Tesla has applied to expand its Shanghai Gigafactory to produce more than one million vehicles and pouch battery cells. Tesla, on the other hand, has placed plans to establish a second production line at the factory on hold after failing to obtain consent from Chinese officials. Tesla has also verified that no plans exist to expand capacity at the Shanghai Gigafactory.

The Shanghai Gigafactory, Tesla's first in China, opened in 2018. The plant covers 9.3 million square feet, however only a portion of that capacity is now in use for manufacturing. Initially, Tesla engaged approximately 2,000 workers to construct EVs at the site.

In addition, Tesla is constructing a new factory in Shanghai to manufacture large-scale batteries. The mill will be able to manufacture 10,000 "Megapack" energy storage devices per year.

Tesla now operates six Gigafactories in Fremont, California, Sparks, Nevada, Berlin, Germany, Shanghai, China, Austin, Texas, and Buffalo, New York.

Tesla also intends to construct a Gigafactory in Monterrey, Mexico.

Gigafactories are massive factories that manufacture batteries, electric car components, and other goods. Tesla's first facility was in Fremont, California. The Nevada plant manufactures battery packs and energy storage equipment. The Texas factory will be the future home of Cybertruck and the Model Y manufacturing hub in the United States.
